How to Prepare for Your Appointment for Gastroscopy Under General Anesthesia
About the procedure
Gastroscopy is a technique in which the lining (mucous membrane) of the esophagus, the stomach, and the duodenum can be examined.
Please make sure someone accompanies you at your examination.
Patients are not allowed to drive or operate machinery for 12 hours after receiving anesthetics.
This examination must be paid for by the patient.
A Helicobacter Pylori test is included in the price. Please note that an extra charge applies for the collection of a tissue specimen for histopathological examination.
Patients who register for an examination which they will pay for are asked to go to the Reception Desk of the Specialist Outpatient Care Department (Elevator 3, 1st floor) to make the payment.
How to prepare for your appointment
The patient must be in a fasting state (do not eat or drink anything within 6 hours of the scheduled examination). The procedure will be performed under general anesthesia, so it is recommended to have an ECG, complete blood count, and electrolyte panel done a few days before the procedure; the results should be consulted with a family doctor.
Otherwise, you should arrive at the Diagnosis and Treatment Department an hour earlier to have these tests performed before the examination; the tests are billed according to the current pricelist.
Medications
Patients on blood-thinning medications must consult the attending physician within a week of the scheduled procedure in order to discontinue or modify the therapy (an INR test report must be brought to the examination, which is valid for 7 days).
Other regular medications should be taken as usual with a small amount of water.
Results
The gastroscopy report will be available immediately after the procedure; the histopathology report, if applicable, will be ready within 14 working days.
Call 516 17 11 66 to find out whether your report is ready to be collected.
The histopathology report can be collected in person or with written authorization at the Main Reception Desk (behind the doorman’s room) from Monday to Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. (until 6:00 p.m. on Thursdays).
